Katsande: First goal for Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs stretched their lead at the top of the PSL standings with a crucial 1-0 victory over Orlando Pirates in the Soweto derby at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Katsande: First goal for Chiefs

Willard Katsande scored his very first goal in AmaKhosi colours to seal the win, much to the delight of the large crowd that was gathered at the Calabash venue.

Pirates enjoyed more of the chances going forward in the opening stages of the match, with Mpho Makola looking like a real livewire.

Howevre, they failed to test Chiefs' young goalkeeper Reeyaad Pieterse, as the Bucs players were guilty of wayward shooting.

The best chance of the half fell for Chiefs, with striker Kingston Nkhatha just inches away from redirecting Siphiwe Tshabalala's cross goalward with keeper Senzo Meyiwa at his mercy.

The score remained 0-0 at half-time and it seemed like the millions watching would be forced to endure yet another scintillating draw.

However, Chiefs showed a lot more vigour in the second half and were unlucky not to score, as Reneilwe Letsholonyane sent his shot over when it looked easier to hit the target.

They found the opener in the 63rd minute though when Katsande connected with Tshabalala's corner at the far-post of a crowded box and sent the Chiefs fans into a frenzy.

It became a clumsy affair thereafter, as Pirates chased the game only to concede the possession cheaply along the way.

AmaKhosi were content to sit back and look for openings on the counter, but nothing really came off them and Stuart Baxter's men happily collected the three points on the day.
